Oakes
Robert Barber (1814 - 1879) and Harriet Elizabeth Oakes (1816 - 1881) were married at the Norfolk Street Primitive Methodist Church, Guelph, Ontario, in 1836. It was the year they both had arrived in Canada, having left, together with two of Robert's brothers - James and William, and Harriet's parents and siblings.
Harriet's parents were Jonathan Oakes (1791 - 1878) and Dinah Short (1793 - 1866). Both were born in Cratfield, Suffolk and died in the little hamlet of Oustic, in Eramosa Township, Wellington County, Ontario.

Jonathan Oakes and Dinah Short were married on the 17th of October, 1815, at St. Mary's - the parish church of Cratfield, Suffolk. Both made their mark 'X' in the registry. The witnesses were William Westrop and Jemima Oakes.

I am also grateful for much help with my Oakes family research and material, received from the records and from conversations with Mr. Jonathan B. Nelson and Mr. Gregory Oakes. Mr. Nelson is now deceased. I first knew of Gregory Oakes when, on a visit to St. Mary's, Cratfield with my father, Freeman Barber, in the early 1990's, I saw that a Gregory Oakes of Elora, Ontario had signed his name in the guest registry just prior to our own visit there. Naturally, I looked up Gregory on returning to Canada and we were able to exchange many pictures and much useful information on our families as they intersect.
