ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE.-
Still another of the old pioneers has been called away, in the person of Mr.
Robert Barber, who was born in Suffolk, England, on the 14th of April, 1814,
and at the time of his death was just about sixty-five years of age. In 1836,
he arrived in Canada with his father's family, and at once settled in Guelph,
and the following year he married a daughter of the late Jonathan Oakes. Deceased,
resided in Guelph ten years and assisted to clear the bush where the town
now stands. In 1846 he purchased lot 4, in the 2nd concession of Eramosa,
and resided there till 1859, when he sold his place and leased the Fergusson
Blair farm near Guelph. Ten years later he purchased 200 acres in Eramosa,
lot 12, 7th concession, which he worked up to the time of his death. On the
13th of February he went to Guelph to consult a doctor, as he had not been
feeling very well. He remained at the residence of his son that evening, and
becoming worse was unable to leave for home. He gradually grew worse, and
died on the 3rd of April. Mr. Barber was a man highly respected by all his
acquaintances. He leaves a wife, six daughters and four sons, to mourn the
loss of a husband and father. Deceased was the father of our respected townsman,
Mr. John Barber, who has been employed at Ryder's Carriage Works for a number
of years.
