James Barnard
James Barnard was the son of James Barnard (shoemaker) and Sarah Unknown (b. 1786). He was born in 1821 (cf. Registry in St. Mary's parish church, Kingsland Place), Southampton, Hampshire and he was the father of Harry Barnard.
Like his father James, James was a shoemaker (cf the 1841 Census of Southampton, Hants). His father is listed (see below) in the 1836 Directory (and subsequent directories) of Southampton, living at 20 Cossack Street (see below).
James (b. 1821) married Sarah Bargent (b. 1821 Basingstoke - d. Basingstoke, 1876) in December of 1849, in Southampton, Hants (cf BMD). In the 1881 Census, James is listed as a widower (daughter Sarah is living with him in 1881). He died in September of 1898, in Basingstoke.
Besides Harry Thomas, James and Sarah had (at least) James William Barnard (christened on the 14th of March, 1852, Basingstoke, Hampshire - d. March, 1885, Basingstoke) and Sarah Barnard (born ca 1858, Basingstoke, Hampshire). The 1841 Census has James Barnard as age 20, shoemaker. He is living with his mother Sarah, age 55. She may have been a widow at that time as the M for married has been crossed through. The residence is Cossack Street, Kingsland Place, Parish of St. Mary, Southampton, Hampshire, England.
According to the England and Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1861-1941, James information is as follows:
BARNARD, James - of Winchester Street, Basingstoke, Hants, shoemaker, died 26 August 1898, Probate London 24 Sept. to Frederick Pridmore solicitor's clerk and Thomas Gordon, licensed victualler, Effrects: 817 pounds 11s. 11d, Resworn January 1899 737 pounds 11s. 11d.

One of the above Sarah Bargent(s) was the wife of James Barnard, b. 1821. Both of the above were b. in Old Basing (Basingstoke). Presumably it is the latter as the spelling of 'Bargent' squares with previous records I have.
