James John Austin
James John Austin
James John Austin was born, 7 July 1853, at 49 Bell Street, Lisson Grove, Registration District of Marylebone (London, UK) - but just steps from Paddington Green, and St. Mary's church (see Marylebone maps).

He was a tobacconist, working with 'Lambert and Butler' at their Oxford Street factory.
James was the son of James Aitkin (alias Attkin or Atkin) Austin and Mary Maria Scarfe. He married Monica Kelly (born ca 1855, parish of St. Martin in the Fields, London) on 26th April, 1874 at the Parish Church of Islington, Middlesex County (London). On the marriage certificate, the father of James is noted as James Atkin Austin, blacksmith and the father of Monica is listed as James Kelly, tailor.
Banns for the marriage were read on the 5th, 12th and 19th of April by Rev. A. Ewing. "John James Austin, Bachelor and Monica Kelly, both of this Parish." The Parish was Saint Mary and the borough was Islington.

At the time of their wedding in the parish of Islington, 26th April, James John Austin's address is 14 Half Moon Crescent. He was a tobacco manufacterer - bachelor, of age; and Monica Kelly - address 10 Grove Road (see Marylebone maps) - spinster, a minor. The names of the witnesses appear to be: John Chipp and Caroline Bute.

In the 1881 Census James John Austin was listed as 'head,' tobacco cutter, age 27, residing at 101 Usk Road, Battersea, Surrey (Greater London). In the 1901 Census, he is residing in the Civil Parish of Tottenham at #2 Sperling Road. The Frank King family (his son-in-law, is also residing with them at this time (as per the picture just below).
A Barnardo-connection document lists him, in 1907, as living at 8 Bertram Road in Enfield (Greater London). This is St. Andrew's parish. The Municipal Ward was Gren Street and Ponders End, in the 'municipal borough' of Enfield. The Frank King family was living with them (Frank was unemployed at the time.), and thus James was unable to give additional support to his daughter-in-law, Florence Dartnell, who had been abandoned by her husband (James' son), Charles Austin.

In the 1911 Census, James John Austin and his wife Monica are living at Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire. James John Austin died at the Union Infirmary in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, 12 January 1915. His death record (see below) indicates that he died of 1. asthma and 2. heart failure. According to details in the probation of his Will (see reference below), he is said to have been living at Green End, Braughing, Herts. I don't know why he was living here, having spent all of his life in greater London, unless he was seeking better 'air' due to his asthmatic condition. Perhaps it is an attempt at a healthier environment, due to this illness, and/or perhaps he was living with and being cared for by a relative. According to St. Mary's Church records, Braughing, John James Austin is buried in that church's cemetery. The Infirmary was originally part of the Union Workhouse which in 1894 became the local infirmary and was renamed 'Haymeads.'
It wass after his death, in January of 1915, that Monica visited her daughter Lillian in Burlington, arriving in April of that year.
