Mary Scarfe was the wife of James Aitken Austin and the mother of James John Austin, all of Marylebone, London, England. She was born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk 14 July 1820 (christened 22 July 1820, St. Mary's, Bury St Edmunds). Her parents were Henry Cornelius Scarfe and Susan Lowes. Henry was a cabinet maker, and at the time of her marriage she was residing at Salisbury Street, Marylebone, quite near Christ Church where they were married, June 22nd, 1852.
