Owen O'Connor

Owen O'Connor was born in Co. Kerry, Ireland in 1811 and died before 1881 (cf 1881 Census). He married Catherine Hanafin- also born in Co. Kerry, Ireland in 1811). They moved to London, England prior to 1837, although their daughter Mary Ann was christened in Tralee in 1835.

In 1841 they are residing the Civil Parish of St. Giles in the Fields in the Hundred of Ossulstone (Holborn Division), Borough of Finsbury.

There is descrepancy re the places of birth of the children. Mary is said (in several censuses) to have been born in Cork, but this likely refers to the birthplace of her husband, James Kelly. Mary was likely born in Ireland (Ballard, Tralee, Co. Kerry) while most of her siblings were born in St. Giles Parish, London. (Note: the same discrepancy occurs in that her siblings are sometimes said to have been born in Ireland and in other census references to have been born in England.

Note that Owen is called 'Eugene' in the 1871 Census (see below), but clearly this is the same family. The Irish is: Eoghan (which can become Egan, Eugene or Owen) depending on whether one goes with Irish or Anglicized pronunication. Here is the indication that both Owen and Catherine were born in Co. Kerry, Ireland. The children are all referred to as being born in London (St. Giles Parish), though it is more probable that the eldest, Mary Ann, was born in Co. Kerry.

In the 1861 Census, Owen and Catherine are both said to be 56, residing in the parish of St. Giles in the Fields. (This would suggest they were born ca 1805 - but, see 1881 Census).

Owen and Cathes O'Connor were the parents of:

Mary Ann Connor, b 1834 St. Giles, London, England; wife of James Kelly (who in turn were the parents of Monica Kelly).

Patrick - born 1837, St. Giles in the Field, Middlesex Co., England

Catherine - born 12 July, 1841 St. Giles in the Field, Middlesex (Birth Certificate registry of August 1841 shows her birth date and reference to her parents: Owen Connor and Catherine Connor, formerly Hanafin; residence: King's Street. Owen's occ. is 'porter'

Edward - born 1846 St. Giles in the Field, Middlesex; he married Sarah Swinson

Julia - born 1850, St. Giles in the Field, Middlesex; she married Wiliam Snow.

County Kerry (Irish: Contae Chiarraí) is one of the administrative counties of the Republic of Ireland and one of the thirty-two traditional counties of the island of Ireland, located in the province of Munster. Kerry is the 5th largest of the 32 counties by area and the 13th largest by population.[1] Uniquely, it is bordered by only two other counties: County Limerick to the east and County Cork to the south-east. The county town is Tralee. The diocesan see is Killarney, which is one of Ireland's most famous tourist destinations. The Lakes of Killarney, an area of outstanding natural beauty, are located in Killarney National Park. The tip of the Dingle Peninsula is the most westerly point of Ireland.
