P.E.I. Trainer Family - Miscellaneous Data - by Years 1783 Catherine ??????, later to marry Owen Trainor of Rarutagh townlands, Donagh Parish, Co. Monaghan, is born. Charlettetown Hearld, Family Irish History Vol2 CS480 I7/5 Comming over to Fort Augustus in 1855 from the same parish that Owen and Catherine immigrated from in 1839 naturaly leads to assuming they are related but as of now I don't know what the releationship was. 1788 Owen Trainor is born in Donagh Parish, Co. Family Irish History Vol2 CS480 I7/5 . This is not the wife of our Owen but another example of the confusion that is possible because of the prominence of the Trainor family in the Parish of Donagh, Co. Monaghan. 1815 John Trainor 1815-1833. Stone 198, St. Patrick’s cemetary, Ft. Augustus, PEI . Hazel Powell Matcovick. John was assumed to be one of Owen's sons. Owen would be 27 and Catherine 32. The assumption is that John died in Ireland at age 18 and a stone erected in his memory in PEI. Another version could be that John is the son of the Elizabeth Trainor mentioned next and therefore one of the Ft. Augustus Trainors rather than the Trainors that settled in Donagh, PEI 1816 Elizabeth Trainor 1816-1871 Tyholland, Monaghan, Ireland. Stone 199, St. Patrick’s cemetary, Ft. Augustus, PEI . 1830's "To see Ireland happy you must carefully select your point of view, look for some narrow, isolated spot and shut your eyes to all the objects that surround it; ut wretched ireland, on the contary bursts upon your view everywhere. Misery, naked and famishing, that misery which is vagarant, idle, and mendicant covers the entire country; it shows itself everywhere, and at every hour of the day." (Gustave de Beaumont. 1834 “The cabin was twenty one feet long and nine feet wide. The floor, the bare ground. No fireplace, no chimmney, the fire (made of potato-halaum) made on one side against the wall, and the smoke going out of a hole in the roof. No table, no chair...some stones for seats. No goods but a pot, and a shallow tub, for the pig and the family both to eat out of. there was one window, nine inches by five, and the glass broken half out.” (William Corbett describing a typical home in Co, Cork.) 1834 Edward Trainor, son of Owen and Catherine Trainor of Donagh,PEI, is born in Ireland. History of the Trainor Family On Prince Edward Island 1839-1992 by Reg G. Trainor. 1834/41 Ann Trainor; In the 1881 census Ann says she was born in 1834. IN the 1891 census she becomes younger as she claims to have been born in 1840. In the 1901 census she becomes even younger and claims now to have been born in 1841. Her grave stone reaches a compromise and says she was born in 1836. All accounts agree she was born in Ireland. Allen Beagan 1836-38 “James Beagan is listed as head of household in The History of Ft. Augustus Parish.” This notation shows up in all local histories of the Beagans on PEI. I happen to think its a reference to James Brogan of lot 36.

July 23,1839 "A search of land records at the P.E.I. Archives reveals that Owen Trainor leased 250 acres of land 3 miles from Johston's River bridge from Alexander MacDonald".... This is 55 days after the arrival of the Consbrook and the Agitator. Owen and Catherine's children include: John: 1816 - 1883; James: 1821 - 1887; Peter: 1824 - 1885; Bridget: 1829 - 1889; Edward: 1834 - ? There were four children which could not be identified. The most likely reason for this is that they were females which married and died by a name other than Trainor. The reason one girl, Bridget, could be identified is that she never married and died in Johnston's River under the surname of Trainor." History of the Trainor Family On Prince Edward Island 1839-1992 by Reg G. Trainor.
1841 "The 1841 census shows Owen Trainor, farmer, to have 300 acres of land, 3 miles from Johnston's River Bridge. The census also informs us with information on his family. There were two males in the family under the age of 16, one male between the ages of 16 and 45 and one male between the ages of 45 and 60. This gives us a total of seven people in the family. This means that four children were no longer living at home. By comparing the birth dates with the age catagories in the census we can conclude that John and James were two of these four. We can also assume that the other two children were probably girls who married and have assumed a different surname. Additional information in the census includes: all seven were Roman Catholic; all were natives of Ireland; the number of years of lease expired was one; the number of years of term of lease remaining was 999; the number of neat cattle owned was two." May 25,1841 The census of lot 35 and lot 36 south records no Beagans. But in consequence of his being induced to enter the army on the out-break of the American rebellion in 1775 and afterwards being involved in disputes with the local goverment which obliged him to be absent from the Island - the most of his original settlers and those who followed him from Scotland were induced by the offers of other proprietors who had not provided settlers for their lands to leave lot 35 and 36 to settle themselvs onto ------ from lot 36 to the east of the island point and than on the south side of the Island to Three Rivers in ----- The decendents of many of Capt. 1861 Census of lot 35 south has head of the household listed as Peter Beagan, blacksmith. Than that is crossed out and Owen's name is substituted and occupation is teacher. Owen has one girl under 5, one girl age 5 to 16, and one girl age 16 to 21. There are two males age 16 to 21 plus Owen. Owen is the only one listed as married and 1 death occured in the past year. The 3 oldest were born in Ireland and the 3 youngest in P.E.I.. One death has occured in the past year (baby John?) and all 6 are Roman Catholic. His rent is paid one half in produce and one half in currency. In the past year he harvested 9 bushels of wheat, 67 bushels of oats, 100 bushels of potatoes,25 yds of fulled cloth and 30 yds not fulled plus 30 lbs of butter. He has 1 horse, 4 neat cattle, 4 sheep and 1 hog. His neighbors are James Shepherd, Pat Sherry, Hugh Sherry, John McDonnell, W. McNally, William Koughan, Thomas McAdams, Pat Beagan, Justin McCarthy, Edward Trainor and Pat Woods. The difficult part of this is explaining who the people are in this census. Owen is easy and we will call him #1, he is 34 and was born in Ire. The female under 5 must be Owen and Ann's daughter Margaret born in PEI which accounts for #2. The girl born in PEI between 5 and 16 should be John and Cecelia's daughter Mary Ann, #3. The only female that could be between 16 and 21 and born in Ire. would be Cecelia, John's wife #4. Of the two remaining one is probably Peter whose name was crossed off the census as head of household and could have been born in Ire, call him #5. That leaves an opening for a male between 16 and 21 born in PEI. Who that would be is a real question mark. Even saying Peter is probably wrong because we have Peter Beagan's signiture on a land transfer in 1842, although I suppose that could have been his father. And the final question is where is Ann?
1861 The census of lot 35 records Patrick Bagen (Owen's brother) as a farmer from Ireland with a family of 6, all Roman Catholics. Two males under 5 years of age, 1 female under age 5, one male age 5 to 16, and Patrick and his wife are listed between the ages 16 to 45. He has 50 acres of which 15 are under cultivation. His lease is calling for one half annual rent and his land is rated as 2nd best. In the past year he harvested 22 bushels of wheat, 100 buahels of corn, 200 bushels of potatoes and 100 lbs of butter. He has 10 yds of fulled cloth and 40 yds not fulled. He owns 2 horses, 5 neat cattle, 10 sheep and 2 hogs. His neighbors are Hugh Sherry, Mrs McNally, William Houghan, Owen Beagan, James McAdams, Justin McCarthy, Edward Trainor, Patrick Woods, Michael Handrahan and Owen McAvinnia.
