Jane Hayles

Jane Hayles, daughter of William Hayles and Frances Cogger, was born in 1824 and christened 4th of July, 1824 in Whippingham, IOW. On 27th January, 1840 (after the due reading of banns) she was married to Henry Smith (b. 14 April, 1818, Arreton, IOW), at the church of St. Mildred, Whippingham, Isle of Wight.

Children:

1. Frances Jane Smith - c. 12 September, 1841, Carisbrooke, IOW. In 1861 she was a Servant for a grocer in 81 George Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight. Between 1871 and 1881 she was a Machinist in Newport, Isle of Wight.

2. William Henry Smith - c. 14 January, 1844, Node Hill, Carisbrooke, IOW; died at Newport at age 13, in 1856.

3. Nicholas Walter SMith - b about 1845 in Newport, Isle of Wight. He died about 1845 in Newport, Isle of Wight. He was ten months old

4. Harry Smith - born 11 October, 1846, Newport, IOW; c. 22 March, 1857, Newport. In 1861 he was a Machinist in Newport, Isle of Wight. In 1871 he was a Painter in West Cowes, Isle of Wight. He lodged at 10 Medina Terrace, Cowes.

5. Charlotte, Elizabeth Smith - born 24 October, 1848, Newport; c. 22 March, 1857, Newport; married Edwin Sutton 11 December, 1877, St. Mary, Carisbrooke, IOW. She was a dressmaker in Newport, IOW.

6. Ethelbert Smith - born 17 October, 1850, Newport, IOW; c. 22 March, 1857, Newport; married Charlotte Dyer, 23 October, 1879, All Saints, Freshwater, IOW. In 1871 he was a Painter in Newport, Isle of Wight. He died 26 February, 1936 and was buried at All Saints Church, Freshwater, IOW (residence: Victoria Rd., Freshwater).

7. Emily Ann Smith - born 23 June, 1852, Newport, IOW; c. 22 March, 1857, Newport, IOW. In 1871 she was a Seamstress in Newport, Isle of Wight

8. Edwin Smith - born 11 April, 1854, Newport, IOW; c. 22 March, 1857, Newport; married Annie Jane Buckett, 3 August, 1875, Newport, IOW. In 1871 he was a China Packer in Newport, Isle of Wight.

9. Alfred Smith - born 7 March, 1856, Newport, IOW; c. 22 March, 1857, Newport. In 1871 he was a Draper in Newport, Isle of Wight. In 1881 he was a Tailor in Newport, Isle of Wight

10. Sabina Smith - born ca 1859, Newport, IOW; married Arthur Dillon King, 10th July 1882, Newport, IOW. In 1881 she was a Milliner in Newport, Isle of Wight.

11. Walter William Smith - born ca 1860, Newport, IOW. In 1881 he was a Coach Painter in Brighton, Sussex. He lodged with the Essex family at 3 Wellington Place, Brighton.
