John Cairns

John Cairns, born ca 1829 in Chatham, Quebec, was the son of Henry Cairns and Isabelle Wiley. John married 1. Sarah BAITON (born in Quebec ca 1835, daughter of Donald Baiton and Jessie McAdden) in Ottawa on 4 Jul 1861. They moved to Bangor Township, Hastings County, Ontario and had three children:

1. Jannet - b abt 1867

2. John (twin) - b abt April 1870

3. Archibald (twin) b abt April 1870 - d June or July 1870

Sarah and the twins died in June and July of 1870.

John then married 2. Mary Ann McMILLAN, daughter of James McMillan and his wife Mary Ann Unknown. She was b 26 Jan 1848 in Ottawa - d 23 Apr. 1931, Monteagle Twp., Hastings Co., ON. They had the following children while living in Bangor Township:

1. William CAIRNS - b abt 1873

2. James CAIRNS - b abt 1874; emigrated to Grande Marais, Michigan?

3. Alexander (Sandy) CAIRNS - b 25 Apr 1875; married Annie Letitia Jenkins and had the following children: Earl, Florence, Lillian, Laura, Angus, Don and Bill

4. Elizabeth Florence (aka Flora) CAIRNS - b 6 Mar 1877; married Harry LONG

5. Baby Boy CAIRNS - b & d 28 Sep 1878

6. John CAIRNS - b abt 1879; emigrated to Grande Marais, Michigan?

John Cairns Sr. died in 1880, in Purdy, Bangor Twp., Hastings Co., ON. No death registration can be found.

Mary Ann (nee McMILLAN) CAIRNS subsequently married James ANDERSON. She died on 23 Apr 1931 in Monteagle Township, Hastings County, Ontario and is buried in the Emmanuel Cemetery, Monteagle Twp., Hastings Co., ON.

Chatham, Quebec

Chatham Township was established in 1799, and named after English Statesman William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham (1708-1778). Mostly populated by rich American Loyalists, its post office opened in 1829 and the township municipality was formed in 1845. By the mid-nineteenth century, there were a few hamlets including Dalesville, Brownsbury, and Starneville. Today, Brownsburg-Chatham is a municipality in the Laurentides region of Quebec, Canada, part of the Argenteuil Regional County Municipality. It is located along the Ottawa River, just west of Lachute, and includes the communities of Brownsburg, Cushing, Dalesville, Greece's Point, Pine Hill, and Saint-Philippe.
