John Austin

John Austin was likely born in Southwark, Surrey (Greater London), circa 1781. He married Ann Jane (Unknown) before 1818. She was likely born in London as well, ca 1785.

They were the parents of James Aitken Austin (c. 18 April, 1824, Christ Church, Southwark, Surrey (Greater London), England).

All of the children were born in Christ Church Parish, at the Austin residence on Collingwood Street (now Columbo Street). There is a burial record, likely of 'our' John Austin, who died in the parish of Christ Church, County of Surrey, abode: Collingwood Street; March 2nd, 1828 (aged 47). The ceremony was performed by W. Mapleton.

Note: This precludes 'our' John Austin being the celebrated John Austin of 'Happy Family' fame (as thought previously by this researcher), the latter also of near proximity in Southwark and who did not die until circa 1851. He too was married to a wife named Ann, as per the 1851 Census, and other children seemed at first glance to have been the Austin family to which I was seeking to establish connection. (The Collingwood Street connection seems to indicate the former John Austin, d. 1828). This John and Ann had a daughter, Mary, b. 23 April 1826, while the latter John and Ann Austin had a daughter, named Mary Ann, born 16 July, 1826, all in Christ Church, Southwark. Possibly both John Austin's are connected (the latter being from Nottinghamshire and his wife from Lincolnshire, but as yet there is no known connection.

John and Ann had the following children (all of whom were born on Collingwood Street, Southwark, Surrey).

5. James Aitken Austin - 24 Feb. 1824; c. 18 April 1824, Christ Church, Southwark, London

6. Mary Austin - b. 24 Jan. 1826; c. 23 April, 1826, Christ Church, Southwark, London

7. Charles Thomas Austin - 2 December, 1827, Christ Church, Southwark, Surrey (Greater London), England; res. Collingwood St.; buried 31 May 1829, Christ Church, Southwark)

The Mormon IGA records have John Austin, b. about 1781, of 'Coolingwood, Sourwork (sic) and Mrs. Ann Austin, b. about 1785, of Coolingwood, Sourwork (sic), London, England; and their daughter, Caroline Austin, b. 7 June, 1813, Collingwood, Sourwork, London, England.
