Ann Hayes
Ann Hayes, the wife of James Newman, was born 10 May 1818 in Manningford Abbot, Wiltshire, England. She was the daughter of John Hayes and Ann Hibberd. Her siblings were James, Avice and Emma. She is present in the 1841 Census of Wiltshire, living in Manningford Abbots - recorded as Ann Newman.
Ann Hayes and James Newman were married in 1838 in Manningford Abbot.
Ann died 11 November, 1905 and was buried in the Old Hopkins Cemetery, Old York Road and Old Guelph Road, Dundas, Ontario. Hers was the last interment there before it fell into disuse and became quite overgrown, the stones broken and scattered. (The cemetery has since been repaired and most of the stones gathered into a cairn, though the Newman stone remains.)
In her later years Ann Hayes was known as 'blind Grandma' and was remembered by my aunt, Hazel Almas MacDonald, with whom I talked about Ann Hayes Newman, shortly before her death.
